Earthscape is Hiring a Landscape Designer Near Neenah, WI

We are looking for a Landscape Designer to join our company. NOTE: Our current designer of 16 years is getting ready to step away in the next few years. For the time being we are looking not only for her replacement, but for someone who will train under her for a year or so. In this position, you will learn to use computer-aided design software to help bring our client’s landscaping/hardscaping dreams to life. Expect to learn two different landscape design programs that will allow the customer to fully visualize the project in 2D and 3D. You will suggest where to place plants, structures, and different types of hardscape on their property. After hearing the wants and needs of the customer you will create a design according to what they prefer. Once your design is complete you will meet with the customer to go over their designs in the office or at the jobsite. While computer design skills and customer relations are important, being familiar with many different types of plants that thrive in a particular environment is crucial. You will tally a plant ledger and calculate the plant and tree cost for each job. After that is finalized you will be responsible for ordering the correct plants and trees for that job. In addition, you will be responsible for separating and grouping the vegetation into the correlating jobs in the greenhouse. This position will require physical labor such as greenhouse duties and plant placement at the jobsite, but creating the design will be your primary responsibility in this role.

  • Client communications to determine needs and wants from their project.
  • Draft an initial conceptual design to show the client his/her project.
  • Finalizing the customer’s design and presenting the final details/cost to Jason.
  • Order and organize plant material for each job.
  • Occasionally overseeing the landscaping team as they set up the jobsite.
  • Picking out materials and finalizing changes to your design. Mulch vs stone, curbing vs black edging, and pavers vs flagstone. After a decision has been made you will document these details in the project folder.
  • Bachelor's degree in landscape architecture or landscape design is NOT required. (preferred)
  • Must have the ability to work in a fast-paced, team-oriented environment while maintaining a positive attitude.
  • Learn computer generated designs (two programs) Computer experience and skills necessary.
  • Surveying experience optional– will train.
  • Knowledge of good design concepts, irrigation requirements, and hardscaping proficiency.
  • Certification from the Association of Professional Landscape Designers (preferred)
  • Must be able to work in unexpected weather conditions, rain or shine.
  • This position wears a lot of different hats. You won't only be bound to just the jobs listed in this ad, so being open to learn new skills every day is a must.
  • Here at Earthscape we pride ourselves on creating beautiful hardscapes, we need someone who understands and knows how to create a good looking design that also ties into the customers house/landscaping.
  • This includes having knowledge of all the different types of landscape materials, mulch, stone and pavers. What types of pavers look good with the color of the house as well as the type of plants and trees for the project.
  • Good interpersonal and communication skills. When working with the customer make sure their voice is being heard. Although you are the expert, it is important that the customer feels confident that you have listened to them.
  • First impressions are everything. Customers often have two or three bids for their project. Therefore, it is important to get all the details for a well thought-out design. Being prompt and prepared is a must.
  • Office appointments: This will be the first time the customer will be seeing their design, so it's exciting, but also a nervous time for them. We strive for our customers to feel like family and make them feel at home.
  • Must be an active learner as well as self-motivated. We are looking for someone who takes pride in their work and works efficiently on their own.
  • Good verbal and written communication skills. When communicating with customers you are representing our company. Proper grammar and intelligent wording is important.
  • Negotiation and persuasion ability. (You are also a salesman in a sense.) Being able to sell a customer confidently, on an aspect of your design that they may have not thought of is a skill and bonus of a good designer.
  • An eye for detail is key. Contrasting colors in the plantings, interesting details in the hardscape, and harmony all play into making the design stand out from the competition.
